Two Days in Midyat: A Guide to the Stone City

With its honey-coloured stone mansions, Midyat is one of Mesopotamia’s most remarkable towns. Here is our suggested two-day route:

Day 1: Old Midyat

Start with breakfast in our courtyard, then explore the old town on foot: the famous State Guesthouse terrace and the lanes showcasing the finest stone masonry. In the afternoon watch the silversmiths at the filigree bazaar and pick a handmade keepsake. End the day with sunset over the Mardin plain from our terrace.

Day 2: Monasteries of Tur Abdin

After breakfast head to Mor Gabriel, one of the world’s oldest Syriac monasteries (about 20 minutes away), and visit Mor Abrohom on the way back. In the afternoon, add a half-day trip to Hasankeyf or the ancient city of Dara — see our Explore Midyat page for details.
